This calendar lists the basic maintenance requirements for a garden of modern roses (Hybrid Teas, Miniatures, & Floribundas) that require regular fungicide application to resist the extreme disease pressure of our Northeast Florida climate. If you do not have time or desire to use pesticides regularly, or wish to garden “organically,” our Consulting Rosarians can help you select roses, such as “Earth Kind” varieties, and care practices to meet your gardening goals.
*Note: ALWAYS mix and apply chemicals at the ratios specified on the original manufacturer's container and wear protective clothing and equipment while mixing and spraying.
**Note: For larger gardens, fungicides that cost more initially allow extending your spray interval to 10-14 days. Ask a Consulting Rosarian. Most of the readily available chemicals act systemically. Fungi can develop resistance to systemics, so alternating two or more chemicals is smart. Regularly adding a contact fungicide, such as Dithane M-45, to your mixture will improve disease control. Because contact fungicides act differently, resistance doesn’t build up.
***Note: Only use insecticides if you see critters that are causing unacceptable damage to your roses; then use the least toxic substance to achieve acceptable control of that specific pest.
